The 2014 Showmans Pull up to the old Fairground tober at Brixham’s Furzeham Green will take place on saturday 2nd August after the show has closed for the day 6pm approx. Engines, trailers and vintage vehicles will climb the steep Overgang Road, negotiate the hairpin bend, climb Ropewalk Hill and stop a while in Furzeham Green. Watch the 2011 Showman’s Pull up to the hairpin on YouTube.
This road run will take your breath away – you will need liquid refreshment! So at the end of Ropewalk Hill on the left you will see a disused railway bridge. To the left of it was Brixham Railway Station. This was the Torbay and Brixham Railway terminus from 1868–1963 – read some fascinating history. The original steam locomotive on this link line was the ‘Queen’ (built 1852, Wilson and Co., see here & here), and the Queens Arms inn – tucked behind the bridge – was named in commemoration of her [source: Blackbeard’s Trail]. Hence, the Queens of Station Hill is the most steam savvy of all the pubs in Brixham!
